Substack Notes may be the most genius move the platform could have made.

That noted, I am loathe to commit myself to another proprietary social platform. I think Mastodon is the future I would like to commit to, but, gah!, is the search really borked. I put your fediverse contact information into the Mammoth app and it returned "No users."

I have been unable to find a variety of people I follow(ed) on Twitter because of this lack of search, and the result is that my Mastodon feed simply isn't as good as my Twitter feed was. I use the past tense there because my Twitter feed is now increasingly like Facebook in 2016.

I recently downloaded the Substack app and just wanted to say I've enjoyed reading your content in this platform. For the last few months I'd been reading more email newsletters than Twitter, because I like the longer thought arcs on a more concentrated set of topics. And now it's more fun to read newsletters in the Substack app than in my crowded email inbox 😂

Thanks for that sensible reflection, Jen, and all my best to you and yours for the holidays! Brian S.

Notes feels like it could be useful--it certainly feels warmer and more conversational than Twitter, which isn’t saying much these days--but we will see. The wonky search issue is really a problem with Mastodon; like you, I’ve had trouble finding folks I know are out there somewhere. And the decentralized conversations give it a scattershot feel for me that I’m still adjusting to. Maybe there is no digital water cooler anymore, but good threads would be welcome.
